"The M-72 Automobile"

The book "The M-72 Car" by Mikhail Sokolov tells us about the all-wheel drive version of the GAZ-M-20 passenger Pobeda. The fact that the M-72, developed with a 7-year delay, was eventually able to reach the assembly line, can already be considered luck, even though the choice of engine and some other components for it left much to be desired, and a very short time and more than modest in number of production gave the car there is very little chance of those who really needed it. And yet, at one time, this comfortable SUV was at the level of the best world analogues, almost in no way inferior to them. Everyone who had a chance to try him in business admired him and appreciated him very highly. A lot of people then sought to purchase it at least in a used condition. If we consider the term "jeep" in the modern layman's sense of the word, i.e. as a large, powerful and comfortable car with all-wheel drive and a body close to the "station wagon", then we can safely say that in the USSR it was the M-72 that was the best jeep, and moreover the only one quite massive. Книга "Автомобиль М-72" автора Михаила Соколова, рассказывает нам о полноприводном варианте легковой «Победы» ГАЗ-М-20.  Расхожее клише о том, что это «первый в мире кроссовер» дважды неверно: он стал далеко не первым легковым автомобилем 4х4, да и к кроссоверам не относился — на самом деле это был полноценный внедорожник с высокой проходимостью, но при этом еще и комфортабельный. И он действительно стал первым — самым первым автомобилем вообще, покорившим все огромное бездорожное пространство Советского Союза, как говорится, вдоль и поперек. В этой модели, как в зеркале, отразились все основные черты советского автопрома: с одной стороны мастерство конструкторов, добротность и изрядный запас прочности многих комплектующих, а с другой — убогость, немощь и неповоротливость данной отрасли; косность и дилетантизм руководства. То, что М-72, разработанный с 7-летним опозданием, в итоге смог дойти до конвейера — уже можно считать удачей, даже несмотря на то, что выбор двигателя и некоторых других других узлов для него оставлял желать лучшего, а весьма краткий по времени и более, чем скромный по количеству выпуск давал автомобилю очень мало шансов оказаться у тех, кто в нем действительно нуждался. И все же, в свое время этот комфортабельный внедорожник находился на уровне лучших мировых аналогов, почти ни в чем им не уступая. Все, кому довелось попробовать его в деле, восхищались им и ценили весьма высоко. Очень многие потом стремились приобрести его хотя бы в состоянии б/у. Если рассматривать термин «джип» в современном обывательском понимании этого слова, т.е. как большой, мощный и комфортабельный автомобиль с полным приводом и кузовом, близким к «универсалу», то можно смело утверждать, что в СССР именно М-72 являлся самым лучшим джипом, и притом единственным достаточно массовым. О том, почему его судьба сложилась не лучшим образом; о его конструктивных особенностях и испытаниях опытных образцов; о совершенных на нем поистине гигантских автопробегах и о его съемках в кино; об уцелевших до наших дней экземплярах различной сохранности и о причинах почти полного отсутствия у него официальных потомков — обо всем этом и о многом другом рассказывает данная книга.
